Greedy Roots is a Top Down 2.5D Game created during Global Game Jam 2023 and the theme is Root.

"Greedy Roots" plunges you into a world where trees turn demonic from harmful fertilizers. As a hero coconut tree, your mission is to save nature by defeating these nutrient-greedy monsters.

This 2.5D adventure combines unique movement by extending and retracting roots to absorb nutrients and grow. A leaf-based UI tracks your nutrient levels, critical for survival and overcoming challenges.

MAIN CONTRIBUTIONS

  • Project Management: Served as the team's Project Manager, utilizing online document tools to assign tasks to members, monitor project scope, and successfully ensure the completion of game development, trailer production, and project submission within a tight timeframe of three days.

  • Game Design: Engaged in brainstorming sessions with team members to interpret the theme and design the core gameplay, culminating in the creation of the game's rules and mechanics.

  • Sound Design: Crafted and produced seven types of interactive sound effects for the game, enhancing the auditory experience and immersion for players.

Welcome to the world of "Greedy Roots," where trees turn into demons after being injected with greedy fertilizers!

With gigantic roots, these trees will excessively absorb nutrients from the land and disrupt the ecological balance. The over-consumption of nutrients by those "greedy roots" threatens the survival of you and your tree friends.

Players moves in the game by pulling out roots, which will consumes nutrients and reduces their height. When all nutrients are depleted (loss all of height), the player will dies and the game over.

  • Collecting the sun will increases player's maximum health.

  • Development Process

You, as a tree hero, untouched by greedy fertilizers, determine to defeat those evil "greedy tree" to save the nature.

Players absorb nutrients and increase their height by rooting into the soil, during which they cannot move.

By rooting near enemies, you can absorb their nutrients and attack them. You can attack enemies with fewer nutrients than you.

However, if you root near enemies with more nutrients, you will be attacked and continuously lose health.

  • In order to defeat an enemy, you needs to grow taller than the enemy in order to suck the enemy's nutrients. Otherwise, your nutrition will be sucked away by the enemy.

You can strategically control your height to pass through terrain that enemies cannot, forcing them to move and thereby depleting their nutrients.

During the development process, I utilized online documentation to manage project progress, assign tasks to team members, and collaboratively work on creating planning documents, engineering standards documents, and more.
